With the Smart Arc EAF arc regulation software, AMI-GE has already applied this fuzzy logic to numerous AC EAF installations with great success. The natural extension of this technology is the development of this system for the DC EAF. North Star Steel (NSS), with its policy in continuous enhancements programs for reducing conversion costs, was approached by AMI-GE with an optimization project for the EAF, using systems and expertise obtained from their installations on several AC EAF’ss, to be used for the first time on a DC electric arc furnace.

Performance

The electrode control system has been improved to provide customers with the fastest control response possible (8ms) and the most powerful and sophisticated control options. Some DigitARC® PX3 features include an automatic data logging system for system dynamics identification, and a whole new information analysis software that will allow your engineers to visualize every aspect of the process at high sampling rate. DigitARC® PX3 recognizes and samples every important event automatically (non-conductive charge detection, scrap cave-in, breaker trip) and is also capable of detecting cross-arc events and signal the rest of furnace systems to take corrective actions.
Flexibility
For high performance operation system flexibility is a must, that is why the new DigitARC® PX3 allows users to change regulation control modes at any time during the heat. A new totally redesigned electrical balance control is capable of maintaining the desired electrical balance regardless of the regulation mode selected. This new design provides a whole new area of opportunities in process optimization in order to achieve lower operation costs and higher productivity.
Reliability
Performance does not come without consistency, that is why the system has been designed and built with protection circuits over the already proven VME architecture, serving many different industries for several years with the highest operation standards in hazardous environments. Furnace Overview Screen shows the operator all the information required to know the system status, I/O readings and current operation conditions.
The new HMI design is actually two applications in one; the first one is an intuitive operation interface which provides immediate access to all important system indicators, control buttons and I/O status to furnace operator.
The second application; is a powerful data analysis tool allowing technicians to track any important event during the heat, there will be no more mysteries about electrode breakages, breaker trips, cross-arcs, disconnections, etc. DigitARC® PX3 new analysis capabilities are far ahead of any other product in the industry.
